Two-factor authentication with U2F/other providers

I'd like to be able to use my Yubikey's U2F function for two-factor auth and not Mozilla persona, and there are other U2F provider options which exist. Can Ajenti auth be extended in a modular fashion? Unfortunately I'm inexperienced with Python so this is probably beyond me!

As Persona is shutting down shortly, it'd be good to get some standard MFA options.
